Old Boy’s success creates ‘cricket fever’ at Highbury
Lungi Ngidi was always respectful in all spheres of Highbury life and was an excellent all round sportsman.
THE Highbury family is incredibly proud of Old Boy, Lungi Ngidi’s cricketing accomplishments.
The excitement reached an all-time high when the school’s 1st XI cricket team visited Kingsmead last Tuesday afternoon to watch the Proteas practice and met Lungi in person. Dale Benkenstein, who is also a Highbury Old Boy, was there as the batting coach for the Proteas.
Together Lungi and Dale autographed a cricket shirt for Highbury which will be displayed with pride in the school’s Mike Procter Cricket Pavilion.
Highbury’s marketing assistant, Jacqui Maurice, said Lungi was awarded a full scholarship, including boarding, for Grade 6 and 7 at Highbury and made the most of all the opportunities the school offered.
In Grade 6, he played second XI cricket as an U12 boy and enjoyed an early touring experience travelling to Trinity house.

“He spent most afternoons in the cricket nets or playing rugby on various fields. Being at Highbury exposed Lungi to cricket at a much higher level and allowed him to develop his talent.
“He received his first team playing kit in Grade 7, made the KZN U13A cricket team, and was named Highbury’s ‘Most Improved’ cricket player in the same year,” said Maurice.
She described Lungi as a learner who was always respectful in all spheres of Highbury life and was an excellent, all-round sportsman.
“In 2009 he captained the 1st basketball team, played 1st team rugby, broke the shot-put, high jump and cricket ball throw records, was awarded honours for swimming and represented KZN in the swimming nationals held in Germiston.
“Lungi has inspired the highest levels of cricket fever at Highbury this season and we are so incredibly proud of him,” said Highbury’s headmaster, Roland Lacock.
