Rugby titans clash at derby

The Westville Old Boys and the Land Rover Durban-Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club's 1st and 2nd XV teams played to close-call matches last Thursday evening.

THE Land Rover Durban-Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club hosted the Westville Old Boys’ Rugby Club at their home-ground at the Durban Shongweni Club last Thursday evening.

In the 2nd XV match, the visitors had a strong start with a succession of tries, putting the home side on the back foot for a large part of the game.

With only 14 players for almost 70 minutes of the game, due to an early red card, the Villagers staged an attempted come back late into the second half, but it wasn’t enough to catch the lads from Westville.

The final score was 24 – 12 to WOB. Man of the match went to Sphe Khambule (forwards) and JP VD Westhuizen (backline).

As all local Derby encounters prove, the 1st XV game showed how determined the visitors were to throw everything they could at the Villagers’ side and ensure an evenly matched, epic game.

With a 19 – 0 score in favour of the home side at half time, the visitors scored two quick tries which forced Hillcrest into a desperate counter attack. Hillcrest won 25-12. Man of the match went to Gavin Muir (forwards) and Jaco De Jager (backline).

Villagers’ head coach, Mike de Kock, praised his side’s performance but noted that the players’ lapses in concentration during the second half had cost them dearly.

The local team will take on the Ballito Dolphins in Ballito on Saturday and the match day will kick off at 2pm.
