First division rivals clash in epic match

It was a nail-biting game as the Land Rover Durban - Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club took on their rivals, the Durban Mets at the weekend.

THE Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club travelled to Westville on Friday night to take on their first division rivals, the Durban Mets.

In the 2nd XV match, the visitor’s team worked in unison to gain an edge over their opposition to create a try feast.

The highly spirited Mets had no counter for this plan of attack.

The final score was 48 – 0 to the Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club. Man of the Match went to Tyrone Bakker (forwards) and Brandon Waters (backline).

In the 1st XV encounter, nothing appeared to go right for the visitors.

First blood went to the home side with a well worked try.

It wasn’t long before the home side scored their second try as the Villagers’ side failed to consolidate and find their natural rhythm. Shortly into the second half, the Villagers fought back with a ‘never say die’ attitude.

A yellow card made it even harder for the ‘Lads from the Crest’. The Villagers clawed back quickly in a heroic struggle for supremacy, against an equally challenging and highly motivated Mets 1st side.

The match finished with a 17 – 15 victory to Villagers.

Man of the Match went to Mark Hodgkiss (forwards) and Tyler Smith (backline).

Villagers’ head coach, Mike de Kock, praised the Mets 1srXV for the tremendous game. He admitted that at half time a few hard words were shared between his team and himself. He also gave credit to his team for delivering another win.

l The Villagers’ 3rd XV will kick off their 2018 Season in the KZNRU 4th division with a match against the Toti 3rds at the Durban Shongweni Club from 7pm on Thursday evening.

The Villagers’ 1st and 2nds will play the South Coast Warriors at the Durban Shongweni Club on Friday night from 7pm.
