Cycle race brings action close to home

Residents are urged to be aware of the road closures for the first ever Universal Networks Westville M13 Classic on Sunday.

KZN cyclists are urged to gear up for the exciting road race, the Universal Networks Westville M13 Classic on Sunday, 3 June on the M13 in Westville.

The urban nature of the race will allow riders to take part in an event within riding distance of their homes, while people living along the M13 will be able to watch the action from their front gardens.

Riders will tackle one to five laps of a testing 17km loop in the area between the Westwood Mall and Cowies Hill.

For the event there will be full road closure on the King Cetshwayo Highway while riders start and finish near the central Westville business area at the Blair Atholl (Rodger Sishi Road) off-ramp from the M13.

The races include a testing five-lap 85km event for age-group and elite riders, a three-lap 51km event for the less fit enthusiasts and one -lap (15km) for weekend warriors.

KZN Cycling has gone out of its way to create an event that caters for all riders, with individuals tandems and even a team event making sure riders find something to suit their interests as well as skill and fitness levels.

The team event will provide a relatively new experience for many riders. There are four categories of teams; U23 (including juniors and U17); elite and 30-39 year vets; over 40 vets; and an open team, which includes families or four riders of mixed age groups.

The races will start at 7am. The entry fee includes a breakfast roll and a medal.

Pre-entries are closed but late entries can be made on the day from 5am for R300 per person.
