Kearsney claim new high against Glenwood

Kearsney College took a nine point lead in their waterpolo match against Glenwood High School.

ON Saturday, Kearsney College’s 1st water polo team hosted Glenwood High School, which won the top 10 last year and were expected to be tough opposition.

Kearsney, however, had a near-perfect start as their tight mark forced mistakes that were then turned to disciplined counter attacks. There was almost no resistance throughout the first chukka as the team took a 6 – 0 lead. Wesley Marshall was excellent in defense while Olly Kenny and Tyson Andrews finished off most of the attacks.

Glenwood was unable to deal with the defense and vigorous attack, spearheaded by Taine Buys, Nic Baines and Josh Muller, in the second chukka. The momentum then swung, as Glenwood showed more composure and put in three quick goals. Kearsney responded well though with a late goal to stay in control at 9 – 3.

The third chukka was hard-fought as more chances to score opened up but both sides battled to finish them off. Luc Leclezio was outstanding at the back for Kearsney and ensured the third chukka ended 11 – 5.

Both teams felt the effects of the intensity in the final chukka, but Kearsney dug deep and finished strongly with goals from Ox Carmody, Baines and Muller. In the end, Kearsney won the game 14 – 5.
