Laduma! Kearsney claim victory

In a soccer match up against Westville Boys' High School, Kearsney College claimed a five point win.

KEARSNEY College met Westville Boys’ High School in cold conditions at Botha’s Hill on Saturday. Both teams started aggressively, with Kearsney having the better of the early exchanges.

The hosts had a wonderful opportunity to take an early lead but Fin McLean headed wide from a Nteteko Khoza corner. Westville also had a golden opportunity midway through the first half, but the Westville striker failed to connect a well-timed cross.

The deadlock was broken when Kearsney’s Rory Bloy played in Joshua Barrett behind the Westville defence. The teams went into half time with Kearsney holding a slender 1 – 0 advantage.

From the restart, Westville almost claimed an equalizer, but a fine save from goalkeeper, Jethro Strydom, kept Kearsney in the lead. Mzu Phike doubled Kearsney’s lead shortly afterwards, when McLean’s back post header ricocheted off the goalpost, into his path, and he duly headed home.

Westville struck back almost immediately with a fine free kick and claimed a point against Kearsney. McLean got his first goal in the match, and Kearsney’s third, when he headed home after some good work on the left wing by Dane Mertsch.

McLean then scored his second goal of the match when he headed a Bloy cross from a free kick, upping the score to 4 – 1 in Kearsney’s favour. Westville pulled another goal back when a corner kick was kicked goalward into a congested penalty area.

Kearsney’s fifth goal started at the back by Gcina Gumede. He passed to Mertsch on the left, who in turn played McLean behind the Westville defence. McLean calmly struck home from the top of the 18-yard area to complete a well-deserved hat-trick and a fine 5 – 2 win for Kearsney.
