Basketball
On Saturday Kearsney travelled to Northwood to play outdoors in the howling wind and overcast conditions.
Kearsney found it difficult to score, with the wind negating any outside shooting, which meant most baskets were scored close to the hoop. Kearsney controlled Northwood’s offence by applying good pressure defence. The visiting team was ahead 19 – 9 at half time.
In the second half conditions didn’t get any easier, with passing showers and the wind blowing up a lot of dust. The game continued much like the first half and Northwood scored freely and Kearsney struggled offensively, missing a number of easy shots which could have secured the game for them.
Kearsney eventually emerged as winners with a final score of 36 – 25.
Cricket
Kearsney faced a powerful Northwood side in Saturday’s cold blustery conditions in Durban North. Kearsney won the toss and elected to bowl first. Initially it seemed to be the right decision, with Northwood at 55/5 after 25 overs.
However, two excellent half centuries from Northwood provincial players, Jeremy Martins and Andile Mokgakane, saw them reach a respectable 181. Pick of the Kearsney bowlers was Michael Brokensha with 2/29 in 10.
Kearsney were bundled out for 63, with Jeremy Martins getting a fifer and only Taine Muirhead offering stoic resistance with a gutsy 29*.
