Gillitts club courts first squash tourney

The Gillitts Squash Club is the only club in KZN with a full-sized doubles court.

THE Gillitts Squash Club was a hive of activity when it hosted its first squash open tournament recently.

Play started on Thursday, 11 April and the finals were held that Sunday.

Four singles divisions and one doubles section saw 80 participants, including many of KZN top players.

Spectators were also treated to bar and braai services and rugby on a big screen on the Saturday.

The Gillitts club is the only one in KZN with a full-sized doubles court. This made the doubles section of the tournament a real treat for the enthusiastic crowds.

“Doubles is a relatively new innovation to squash, and to Gillitts in particular, but it is growing in popularity every year. It is the club’s intention to make the Gillitts Open an annual event and, given the turnout this year for the inaugural Open, it should prove to be a popular attraction on our local squash calendar,” said committee member and event organiser, Patrick Edy

The Gillitts Squash Club was delighted with the response from the talented pool of entrants.

Edy also thanked the sponsors for their ongoing support for making the event possible, and to the main prize sponsor, Truck Centre Durban.
