Villagers now aim to claim Murray Cup

Even though the Villagers' 1st XV claimed another win, they didn't win the first division league but aim to claim the prestigious Murray Cup Knockout Tournament title.

THE Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club hosted arch rivals, the South Coast Warriors, at the Durban Shongweni Club on Friday night, the local outfit’s last KZNRU First Division league game of the 2019 season.

The 2nd XV match was declared a walkover as SCW was unable to field a 2nd XV side and the Villagers picked up 5x valuable league points as a result.

The 1st XV match provided an evening of good clean club rugby as the SCW side lived up to their reputation as one of the strongest and toughest sides in the league.

The Villagers work hard for each point and, with five minutes of full-time left, it looked as if the visitors would snap up a victory. The home side made a final play as they staged a late surge into their opposition’s territory and, with a well-worked sequence of play, crashed over for a try followed by a conversion. The Villagers claimed a 24 – 15 victory.

Man of the Match went to Sheldon Phillips (forwards) and Matt Cele (backline).

The Turaco/Envirosan Hillcrest Villagers 3rd XV hosted the 4th Division log leaders, the Crusaders 3rd XV. The encounter gave the hosts their last chance this season of winning the Fowden Bowl Trophy, but sadly it was not to be as the Crusaders won 23 – 7. Man of the Match went to Brian Lewis (forwards) and Charl de Klerk (backline).

All three sides have a well-deserved bye this weekend.

The Villagers’ 1st and 2nd XVs will go back to the drawing board and prepare for the prestigious Murray Cup Knockout Tournament, which begins in two weeks time.
