Westville Old Boys make rugga history
The Westville outfit will now take on College Rovers in the semi finals of the Murray Cup this weekend.
WESTVILLE Old Boys’ Rugby Club became the first 1st division side to secure a spot in the semi finals in the Murray Cup after their win against the premier division FNB UKZN Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, with a hard-fought win of 26 to 21.
The WOB second team also pulled off an epic result against the Students from the capital with a 46 – 19 win.
The 1st and 2nd teams put in copious amounts of training to prepare themselves for the challenge against an unfamiliar rival.
The second team came out firing and put on an incredible performance against the premier league reserve team.
The 1st team game was a much more intense match up as there was a clash of styles between a more structured WOB team and a free-spirited running game implemented by the UKZN side.

WOB struck first through a strong driving maul that resulted in a try to Kyle Butler. The premier division team was up for the challenge and quickly hit back with two seven pointers. A piercing run from Matt Everitt and great support play from Calvin Walters resulted in level scores at half time.
There were extremely tense moments for both sides during the next 40 minutes as WOB’s scrum pressure resulted in multiple penalties for the away team and some do or die defense from WOB’s back three fended off multiple attacks.
Further tries from Luke Charter and Tyron Tarpey saw the WOB side erupt as the final whistle went and the 26 – 21 result was secured.
Shaun Schuit and Tyron Tarpey were named the man of the match.
Westville Old Boys have joined the three premiership clubs, SA Home Loans Durban Collegians, Varsity College and College Rovers in the semi finals. WOB will take on the College Rovers at Northwood Crusaders on Saturday, 24 August.
