Highway’s Warren pedals up a storm

The local teen hopes to one day don South Africa's colours in an international event.

WARREN Moolman, a matric learner at Westville Boys’ High School, recently snapped up a second spot in the SA National Road Cycling Championships in Swellendam.

Moolman started cycling from a young age and this is now his second year as a junior rider before he moves into the U23 age category.

In 2019, the talented athlete snapped up the win in the U17 individual time trial at the national championships and claimed sixth place in the road race.

“I was really looking forward to go race at the Junior Tour of Ireland in July this year but, unfortunately, it was cancelled due to Covid fears,” he said.

Despite this, the upbeat teen reminisced about the two previous international events he competed in: the Junior Tour of Assen in the Netherlands.

“Although they were very tough, I thoroughly enjoyed them,” he said.

Another one of the many reasons he enjoys the international events was the opportunity to challenge himself by competing against international riders. “I would love to be selected to represent my country one day,” said a determined Moolman.

Moolman thanked his sponsors, Universal Networks and Steel & Pipe for Africa, for their continued support.

“A special thanks to the people of the Westville Cycle Club, more specifically, the chairman, Kelvin du Sart, and his wife, Corinne, for helping develop and nurture my love for cycling from a young age,” he said.
