Jewel arias to be performed at Baroque concert

The concert will feature the exceptional and Cape Town prodigy, Lynelle Kenned.

BAROQUE 2000’s fourth concert of the series takes place on Sunday 30 June, 3pm at the Church of the Mariannhill Monastery.

The concert will feature the exceptional and Cape Town prodigy, Lynelle Kenned, a soprano who will perform some of the jewel arias of the operatic repertoire by Handel: Tornami from Alcina, Ritorna o caro from Rodelinda and the moving Lascia ch’io pianga from Rinaldo.

She will also interpret one aria from Johann Sebastan Bach’s Cantata 51: Hochster.

The orchestra explores some orchestral works by Purcell (dances from Purcell’s Fairy Queen as well as some from Handel’s Alcina).

Refiloe Olifant, the violinist, performs the Sonata No3 Op1 by composer Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint-Georges, who was born in the French colony of Guadeloupe.

He was brought to France by his father and became a champion fencer. He is best remembered as the first classical composer of African ancestry.

Ample and safe parking is available and the Monastery’s Tea Garden is open for refreshments.
