Cowies Hill couple shares special bond

Lily and Abel Abraham celebrate 50 years of marriage.

COWIES Hill couple Lily and Abel Abraham clicked the first day they were introduced to each other by a pastor. Fifty-two years later, the couple is still smitten with each other and will be celebrating their golden anniversary on Friday, March 10.

“We did not date for a long time. We met in 1971, got engaged in 1972 and tied the knot in 1973 at the Bethesda Temple in Durban,” said Lily.

As an only son, Abel’s mother asked a pastor to find a woman that would be suitable for her son and be a good wife and daughter-in-law.

“The pastor knew both our families well, thought we would be compatible and introduced us to one another. We were attending different churches at that time, but after we met, Abel started attending our church. I was a Sunday school teacher,” said the bubbly Lily.

After they tied the knot, they stayed with Abel ‘s family in Chatsworth before moving to their home in Phoenix where they resided for 21 years.

“After that, we moved to our son’s and daughter-in-law’s house in Sarnia; we stayed with them for 18 years. We have settled in our daughter and son-in-law’s home here in Cowies Hill,” said the couple who is blessed with two children and four grandchildren.

The Abrahams said they are thankful to God who has kept them safe and happily married for more than 50 years. “It feels surreal – time really does fly,” said Lily.

She worked at various companies doing admin work while Abel worked at a printing company.

Now that they are retired, they said they enjoy their quality time and do almost everything together.

“We love watching movies, going out on weekends and love sitting outside and relaxing in the garden; it is so peaceful,” said Abel.

Asked how their relationship has lasted for more than 50 years, Lily said: “We bear with each other – no marriage is a bed of roses – there are ups and downs but more ups. Most importantly, we love each other and our beautiful family.”

She added that her husband is a very caring man who is always there for her. “And for that I am thankful,” she said.

Abel looked at Lily, smiled and stated that he is also grateful for his wife.

“I appreciate everything she does for me. She cooks delicious food for me, and her chicken curry is the best,” he said.
