Mother’s 8-Mile Midmar mission

Kim Joubert will swim her 8-Mile to help raise funds for CHOC.

KIM Joubert will take on her 8-Mile challenge at the 2025 aQuellé Midmar Mile, all to support Childhood Cancer Foundation SA (CHOC).

With 13 Midmar Miles under her belt, Joubert said she has always been passionate about swimming, but in recent years, she stepped back to cheer on her daughter, Kailey, who is now a dedicated KZN Open Water and Pool Swimmer.

The Hillcrest resident said her commitment to CHOC goes back years.

“Together with the unstoppable Iris Varty – Durban Daisy herself – we launched the Hillcrest Herd, raising more than R150 000 for CHOC in just two years!

“This year, looking back on all those Midmar memories, I realised it was time for me to jump back in and make a big splash. Comrades isn’t quite for me, but the 8-Mile challenge? Absolutely!” she said.

For Joubert, going back to her roots to take up the challenge has been exciting as she said training has been an absolute joy.

“I’m swimming 2km daily at Virgin Active Hillcrest, and it’s incredible to be back in the water with such a meaningful purpose.”

Hillcrest resident, Kim Joubert.

To qualify for the 8-Mile, each swimmer needs to raise R10 000 and because of the generosity of the donors and the final R2 900 contribution from Hillcrest Primary School, Joubert said she has officially hit her target!

“Now, my focus is on both training and helping the Hillcrest Herd reach (and hopefully exceed) their targets. Our goal is to raise even more for our young CHOC warriors battling childhood cancer.”

If anyone would like to join the Hillcrest Herd or make a donation to this wonderful cause, email marketing@hillcrestprimary.co.za.

“Every bit helps, and together, we are making waves for a brighter, cancer-free future,” added Joubert.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
