Some of the restaurants started opening after  President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that under continued level 3 regulations, leisure businesses such as hotels, restaurants, casinos and cinemas would be allowed to reopen and operate while adhering to strict physical distancing guidelines.

The centre’s general manager, Nisha Kemraj assured shoppers that all health and safety practices are of primary importance.

“Apart from the shopping centre employing its own rigorous safety protocols, each of the outlets themselves are completely Covid compliant,” she said.

Kemraj appeals to the public to support the restaurants as they were negatively affected in the last months.

Sharing food in a communal space is not a new concept. Innovative mall developer James Rouse is known for many bright shopping mall ideas, but developing the food court in 1971 in the US was probably his best yet.

Back then there might not have been the smorgasbord of stores that we see in malls today but the concept grew and these days, almost every mall, airport, college and hospital has one.

Of course the concept might have also been borrowed from the Turkish food markets that existed 500 years ago, but whatever the origin; these days the food court is as much a part of a mall experience as the actual shopping.

The Pav has more than 40 eateries that is spread across the food court and a smattering in other parts of the mall as well.

There are the popular chain stores but there also a number of specialty spots If you want to take a little look at the food court outlets you can follow Pav on social media: Instagram – @thepavilionsa and Facebook – The Pavilion Shopping Centre, and be encouraged to try out one or more of the spots.

For more information on any of the food court outlets, you can contact Nicole Gounden on 031 275 9800. Alternatively, visit www.thepav.co.za.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
