Teen raises awareness of disability

Mr Albinism Top Model and Ambassador SA Khethang Morimoholo from Katlehong continues to shine the light on disability as November marks Disability Awareness Month.

Morimoholo is a fashion model, which he started as a hobby when he was 15. He started taking modelling seriously after he entered the IT Teen Model search.

He has since worked on various platforms, including Mr & Miss Heritage SA 2018.

The 19-year-old model said he was inspired to model when he noticed that most people with albinism were not really participating in such platforms.

He blamed it on a lack of education, adding that people do not understand that albinism affects the skin, hair and eyes only and not the health and mindset of a person.

He said he was being discriminated against from a young age, explaining that when he was young how other children did not want to play with him nor borrow him their toys.

“It would even happen in malls where cashiers would look at me differently and even comment with words like ‘nkawu’ and so on,” he said.

“Disability is not an inability but rather a different ability. Let us see people for who they are and not what they can do. Humanity must be above different abilities,” said Morimoholo.

He said modelling helped him to appreciate who he is and he embraces himself as the coolest person living with albinism in SA.

The young model is running an online magazine titled Sleek Mode and does photography and life coaching for The Flo Foundation.

“I plan to develop a community that shows love, care and peace, where everyone is willing to give a helping hand and where humanity rules,” said he concluded.
