6 killed after car plunges into Zonkizizwe River

Emergency services recovered a submerged Mazda sedan on the R550, with all six occupants declared dead at the scene.

Tragedy struck when the DEMS responded to a distress call reporting a motor vehicle accident on the R550 on the evening of August 31.

According to the DEMS spokesperson, the emergency call was received at 20:26, alerting authorities to a Mazda sedan that had veered off the road and into the Zonkizizwe River.

Upon arrival, Ekurhuleni firefighters found the car overturned and submerged in the river. Emergency personnel worked to retrieve the vehicle, which they recovered using towing equipment.

Tragically, six bodies were inside the vehicle and declared dead at the scene by Gauteng Emergency Medical Services.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the accident remains unknown at this stage.

“The scene was handed to law enforcement agencies for a thorough investigation,” a DEMS official confirmed.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
