Landulwazi Comprehensive School defend Goliath Cup title

Landulwazi Comprehensive School and Mpilisweni Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation obtain top 3 positions at the provincial volleyball league for schools.

Landulwazi Comprehensive School (LCS) in Thokoza successfully defended their championship title during the Goliath Cup final at Fourways High School, on March 10.

Goliath Cup is a provincial volleyball league for schools across Gauteng. It was played over six weekends in Pretoria and in Fourways.

Landulwazi played against Michael Mount in the final. They lost 25-23 during the first set and won 25-18 in the second set forcing a tiebreakers before winning 15-9 in the final game.

They are not the only school that represented Kathorus on the provincial stage, as they were joined by Mpilisweni Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation, which secured position three in the competition.

Coach Mokete Letele from Landulwazi said he is pleased with the U19 volleyball team because he is seeing the improvement in the new and much younger players.

“We brought in Grade Eight to 10 players and they are adapting well. I am sure we will be one of the best teams and top schools in volleyball,” said Letele.

Team captain Thabisile Raphanyana, a Grade 12 learner at Landulwazi, said the competition was not difficult, but one team tried to give them a tough match in the final but overcame it.

Grade 12 learner Ntokozo Mthethwa said she enjoyed the competition although it was sometimes a bit tough.

She said it allowed them to compete against people who could play and this helped her to observe how far she could push herself.

Another Grade 12 learner Wandile Ngema said she is extremely proud to represent the school. She hopes to reach the international stage and eventually become a coach with enough experience to teach others about volleyball.
