Zabalaza Primary Schools’ Tournament held

The Zabalaza Primary Schools Sports Tournament for u-13s was held on September 16 at Leondale Sports Grounds.

The tournament was organised by Zabalaza General Business Enterprise.

Fifteen schools from the Kathorus area took part.

Seven of the schools, including Rebontsheng, Khayelihle, Khehlekile, Sonqoba, Igagasi (defending champions), Encochoyini and Rondebuilt Primary Schools, played football.

Eight schools, including Izibuko (defending champions), Chivirikani, Manzini, Umtholo, Nqubela, Leratadima, Tswaragano and Encochoyini, took part in netball.

Tournament organiser Neo Letele said they wanted to give back to the community.

“Without them we are nothing.

“We also want to take young children off the streets to keep them away from dangerous drugs,” said Letele.

He said the company, which sells classroom furniture and cleaning materials, among other services, hosted the tournament because the schools are its biggest clients.

Igagasi and Sonqoba played against each other in the soccer finals.

Sonqoba won the game by two goals to nil and took home the first prize – a trophy, gold medals and a jersey. Igagasi went away with the runner-up prize – a jersey and silver medals.

Sicelo Mnguni from Sonqoba was chosen as the top goal scorer of the tournament, with four goals, while Siyanda Radebe from the same school was crowned the goalkeeper of the tournament.

Izibuko Primary School played against Encochoyini Primary School in the netball finals. Izibuko won by 12 goals to two. Izibuko won first prize – a trophy, gold medals and a jersey – while Encochoyini received the runner-up prize – a jersey and silver medals.

Nothando Ngwenya from Izibuko was crowned both the top goal scorer and player of the tournament.

This was the second instalment of the tournament, with the first one played in 2016.

Only schools from Katlehong took part in that tournament.

Letele said they decided to involve all the schools from the Kathorus area this year.

“We intend covering the whole of Ekurhuleni South primary schools in 2018,” said Letele.

Letele said their company offers a number of services, namely security services, stationery, cleaning materials, construction, maintenance and office furniture.

They have committed to hosting the tournament annually.

Letele thanked Thulas Sibeko of the education department for consulting with the schools on their behalf.
