Dann Road squatters halt eviction at Glen Marais complex

They threatened to set the sheriff's car on fire.

A Glen Marais resident dodged eviction after alleged EFF members stepped in with violent protest on Friday morning.

According to a fellow tenant at Zeldre Place, an estate on Koppie Road, about 30 suspected EFF members were welcomed onto the property by the occupant being evicted. This person’s furniture was already loaded onto the sheriff’s truck when the protesters started unloading the truck and threatened to set it on fire.

Express confirmed the incident with Analien Rudolf, head deputy of the Kempton Park sheriff’s department.

“The tenant being evicted was unhappy with the situation, so he fetched people from the Dann Road informal settlement to help him,” Rudolf said. “Although nothing was set on fire, they were violent. We phoned the police and our people left the scene. It was not worth it to put our staff in danger.”

According to Rudolf, the current occupant’s home was sold at an auction.

“The eviction was basically done when the protesters arrived. They removed all the furniture from the truck and took it back to his home.”

She added that the sheriff’s office was waiting for further instructions from Kempton Park SAPS. No one was injured during the incident. When Express arrived on the scene, the crowd had already left.
