WATCH: Norkem High matrics face disciplinary action with blazers still missing
It is believed that matric blazers that never arrived, 40-days and last day of school fun led to the chaos that erupted at the school.
The school governing body of Norkem Park High School will institute disciplinary processes against all implicated learners, following an incident at the school on Wednesday morning where police were called to remove matric learners from the school premises.
This is according to Steve Mabona, spokesperson for Gauteng Department of Education, who released a statement on Thursday afternoon, after the district visited the school.
It is believed that matric blazers that never arrived, 40-days and last day of school fun led to the chaos that erupted at the school.
“Irrespective of what might have led to this ill-discipline, this is condemned in the strongest terms,” said Mabona on Thursday afternoon.
“Our investigations continue regarding the circumstances surrounding this incident. Learners must be reminded that they must always ascribe to the code of conduct and follow the necessary communication platforms to raise their concerns,” he said.
“It is important to note this is unacceptable. We can’t have a school where learners decide to misbehave,” Mabona said.

But what happened according to the matrics
Learners told Express on Wednesday everything started two weeks ago when they celebrated their 40 days. Water was poured into condoms and learners threw it at each other.

“This is something matriculants do every year,” one told Express.
“Unfortunately, some teachers were hit. We were told it was disruptive and we immediately stopped. The following day, the Grade 11s did the same thing and we were blamed. We were told they would cancel our matric dance. However, our main issue right now is our matric blazers we haven’t received.”
A group of matric learners, who spoke to Express after Wednesday’s incident, said they started paying for their blazers, which cost over R500 each, in March with the idea to begin wearing them during winter. To date, they are still waiting and school is over.
Learners said a meeting with parents was called last week where they were informed the matric dance had been cancelled and that learners would receive their blazers on August 2, which did not happen.
“This morning [August 7], we went to the deputy principal, hoping to get answers regarding our blazers. She told us to leave and said she did not have to answer to us. We left and attended classes.
“August 7 was also our last day of school and we wanted to have some fun. Some matric boys wore skirts and some girls torn-off pants. We were told before school it was disrespectful. Between periods we were surprised to see the principal with the police, instructing us to leave.
“Even those who were not part of these events were randomly picked and chased off the school premises. It was sad to see the manner in which the police chased us away. They were very aggressive and some of them were even swearing at us.”
Express could still not reach Norkem Park SAPS for comment.
