Memorial service for pilot to be held in Bredell on Saturday

The two men were involved in a four-seater supporting aircraft that accompanied the Sling, that was built by four South African teenagers in 10 days for a trip from Cape Town to Cairo.

A memorial service for a Kempton Park pilot who died in a place crash earlier this month will be held in Bredell on Saturday.

Werner Froneman (38), a former learner at Hoërskool Birchleigh, and fellow South African pilot Des Werner, died in the crash on August 3 shortly after take-off from a Tanzanian airport.

According to life-long friend Gideon Ferreira, the Sling aircraft crashed at 7.30am shortly after take-off from Tabora Airport.

The men, both directors at U-Dream Global, were accompanying a group of South African teenagers as a support team on a flight from Cape Town to Cairo.

Des Werner’s 17-year-old daughter was the founder of the U-Dream Global project that saw 20 teenagers build a four-seater Sling in 10 days for their Cape to Cairo flight.

Unfortunately, their plane didn’t get to Cairo, it went to Addis Ababa and it was grounded. The teenagers then continued from Addis Ababa all the way to Cairo by themselves.

The teens then made their way back to Malawi and waited for the adult team, which was supposed to also make its way there from Tanzania. They never arrived.

Froneman matriculated from Hoërskool Birchleigh in 1999 and according to Ferreira, he went overseas after school. When he came back to South Africa he temporarily lived in Heidelberg before returning to Kempton Park.

“Werner was creative, passionate and enjoyed food, cars, aircraft, adventures, music (he played bass guitar at Oasis Church) and social gatherings with people,” Ferreira told Express.

Froneman was also an international speaker and business mentor at Wealth Creation Institute.

According to his “About Me” page on Mojave International’s website, Froneman’s creed said: “I believe the size of a leader is determined by the depth of his convictions, the height of his ambitions, the breadth of his vision and the reach of his love.”

The memorial service will take place at 11am at Oasis Church, 166 Third Avenue, Bredell.

Froneman leaves behind his wife, four-month-old baby and four-year-old daughter.
