This is what one mobile toilet costs the metro

In Tembisa alone, there are 9 236 such toilets.

Four new contractors are among the 15 service providers appointed by the City of Ekurhuleni to supply and service mobile toilets in informal settlements across the metro.

The other 11 had been providing services to the metro for some time. These 15 service providers will render the service for the next three years.

In Tembisa alone, there are 9 236 such toilets.

According to Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, the City is charged between R25 and R300 rental a month per chemical toilet, while servicing these toilets costs between R66 and R117.

Gadebe said toilets are serviced once a week. But, if the need arises that the toilets need to be serviced more than once, that will be done.

The intention was to appoint a maximum of 20 service providers but only these 15 qualified.

The conditions of the bid stipulated that the service providers must provide toilets for people with disabilities; they must attach the cleaning schedule for all the toilets on the door of each toilet and that they provide the City with a laboratory test certificate for the chemicals to be used in the toilet tanks.

When the current administration came into office in 2016, the ratio (toilets vs families) stood at 1 (toilet) : 10 (per structure). It was resolved that this must be improved to 1 (toilet) : five (per structure), said Gadebe.

“The City is looking forward to high levels of professionalism on the side of the contractors who have all signed inspection forms for the number of toilets on site. The City further appeals to communities to assist the municipality to render a quality service to the people by reporting vandalism.”
