Woman-led operation in CBD leads to 12 arrests
A firearm that was reported stolen in 2009 was found abandoned in Kempton Park during the operation.
Twelve suspects were arrested during the Masakhane Operation in Kempton Park central business district on Saturday.
The successful joint operation was spearheaded by Kempton Park SAPS’s Lt Col Ronelle Dormehl.
Various security companies and organisations, including Drug Free World and AfriForum, were part of the operation.
Although the operation was held from 2pm to 10pm, members from various stakeholders were seen raising awareness of crime and handing out pamphlets from early in the morning at the corner of CR Swart Drive and Pretoria Road.
“Of the 12 suspects, five were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for possession of drugs, one for dealing with drugs, two for theft, one for allegedly assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest and one for an alleged house break-in and theft,” said Sgt Dipuo Ditshego, deputy spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.
“On the same day during the operation, a firearm was found abandoned inside a plastic bag on Gottfried Street in Kempton Park. It was later discovered the firearm was reported stolen in February 2009 at Jeppe SAPS.”
Roadblocks, random stop-and-searches and visible policing formed part of the crime prevention operation.
