Self-defence workshop equips women and children in Kempton Park

Women and children dressed in comfortable clothes came out in numbers to learn a thing or two about defending themselves.

Women of Kempton Park SAPS hosted a free self-defence workshop at Kempton Park Civic Centre on August 17.

Women and children dressed in comfortable clothes came out in numbers to learn a thing or two about defending themselves.

Lt Col Ronelle Dormehl explained the workshop was organised due to it being Women’s Month and the fact that women are often victims of crime.

Community members were shown ways on how to defend themselves during various incidents, including home invasions, anti-rape training and what to do when strangled.

After demonstrations, the audience had an opportunity to try out what they were taught to see if they understood.

Mothers and daughters learn self-defence: Maritza Malan, Zoë Malan (11), Elsje-Marie Bosch (16) and Anne-Marie Bosch was happy to have attended the self-defence workshop.

Norkem Park resident Maritza Malan told Express she was happy that she attended the workshop because she learnt important tricks about self-defence.

“It was fun, but we were also taught to be firm and strong should we encounter such difficult situations. Although we had fun learning, it is also important to remember that in reality it might not be as fun and easy,” said Malan.

“I thought I wasn’t going to attend but my friend encouraged me to and I am glad. I also learnt to be more aware of my surroundings. We definitely have to practise some more and have more of these workshops.”

FH Havenga, Peter Sandford, Jaco de Kock and Joanne Molthahn from Krav Maga (an Israeli self-defence technique) facilitated the first half of the workshop, followed by reservist WO Este Brink (Norkem Park SAPS) and reservist Const Ivan du Plessis (Kempton Park SAPS).

Joanne Molthahn from Krav Maga (an Israeli self-defence technique) gives tips during the practical session of the workshop. Fun was also had as women tried out the different techniques.
