A high-level delegation meeting led by Ekurhuleni MMC for Environmental and Waste Management, Clr Khosi Mabaso, on Friday resolved to pay special attention to waste challenges experienced in Kempton Park.
Chief among the outcomes is the deployment of waste management resources this weekend to deal with the backlog experienced in the area.
Already about six waste trucks are on the ground dealing with the backlog for Friday pick-ups. This will include areas such as Bredell, Pomona, Kempton Park West and Terenure.
“In the afternoon, we are deploying an additional four specialised vehicles to complement the team to ensure all these areas are left clean,” Mabaso said.
An additional 17 specialised vehicles will criss-cross Kempton Park over the weekend in a bid to address the current backlog.
“For this weekend, we will focus on the backlog that was left on Wednesday and Thursday as indicated in the waste collection calendar. We appeal to all residents to take out their bins so the resources will be optimally used.”
A joint operation centre has been activated to ensure that operations run unhindered.
However, the backlog for Monday and Tuesday will be addressed on Monday, September 2 and Tuesday, September 3.
The MMC indicated that while the City was tackling current challenges in relation to the fleet management of waste vehicles, a long-term plan and permanent solution is in place.
“We have gone out on tender to augment 60 per cent of the waste management functions with private resources. This intervention will go a long way in providing stability and efficiency in our quest to keep the city clean and green,” she said.
The City of Ekurhuleni extends unreserved apology for the inconvenience caused.
