WATCH: Empowering women through self-defence workshop

Your best self-defence mechanism is prevention over cure.

On the last day of Women’s Month, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) held a free self-defence workshop and first-aid training for women and children on Saturday at the NG Hoogland Church in Van Riebeeck Park.

Many joined forces to show their support of the need for women and children to be able to deal with crime forces aligned against them, especially regarding incidents of home invasion.

Formel Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) also attended the day and held first-aid training, led by senior medic Jaco Botes. He said they focused on creating awareness of emergencies in the home on a first-aid basis.

“Basically, we discussed what’s to be done in cases like suffocation, cuts, burns and then your extreme cases like CPR,” said Botes.

Fellow attending organisations were members from MML security alongside Alpha Security. Mike de Lange from MML helped sponsor the venue for the event.

ACDP Member of Parliament for Gauteng Hon Bishop Dulton K Adams welcomed all who joined by thanking Willem J Roos, the organiser of the event. He told Express: “According to stats, every three minutes a woman is raped in South Africa.

“We’re living in a lawless society where people are self-entitled and think they may do and take what they want. That’s why we need days like today to create awareness.”

Rachel Sandford from Elite Defence Academy (EDA) joined the day, along with Rob Painter, Emmanuel Papadopoulos, Jen Brown and Marianne Drydon. They all assisted in leading different stations of the programme on self-defence, where Painter gave an introduction on self-defence.

“Your best defence in crime situations is prevention over cure. If you find yourself in a dodgy environment and a suspicious person approaches you, be vocal and alert your surroundings if you fear you might be in danger,” said Painter.
