Safe scholars programme teaches learners road safety
This programme was also supported by the Department of Safety and Security.
The company responsible for road safety, MOTUS, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, announced that its Safe Scholars Programme has reached and educated about 1.5 million learners around safe road usage.
This was officially announced by MOTUS Holdings CEO Osman Arbee during the safety awareness programme held on Tuesday at Sedibeng Primary School.
This programme was also supported by the Department of Safety and Security.
“Safe Scholars, which had initially targeted 300 schools, has now reached over 1 500 schools nationally since its inception in 2015.
“We are overwhelmed by the astounding success of this programme and believe that without partners like the Department of Basic Education, we would not be in this position today,” said Arbee.

“As MOTUS we believe that this type of outreach is a critical pillar in our efforts towards educating children, at grass roots level around the importance of road safety, especially for those children who walk to and from school each day,” he said.
This programme teaches the fundamentals of safe road practices and provides selected schools reflective sashes, which have been made a mandatory part of these children’s school uniform.
Also speaking during this event was the Community Safety Director within the Department of Safety, Connie Thobejane. She also stressed the importance of preaching the safety gospel at the early age.
“There are so many fatalities recorded in this area alone and even though these accidents are not caused by the learners, but in most cases you find that they are the victims.
“And as part of our road safety promotions in the province, we want to educate everybody on road safety, for them to be responsible road users.
“And for people to become responsible road users we must start while they are still young,” she said.
She continued, “It is pleasing to see other stakeholders such as the taxi industry coming to the party to help us promote road safety.”
