Two nabbed while changing rented Mercedes’ number plates

Upon searching the sedan, the metro police discovered three 9mm pistols, ammunition and two false number plates.

A Mercedes-Benz, rented from a company in Pomona, was recovered in Tembisa while two men were trying to fit false registration plates to the vehicle.

Upon searching the sedan, the metro police discovered three 9mm pistols, ammunition and two false number plates.

Kobeli Mokheseng, spokesperson for the metro police, said two men were arrested, while two others managed to escape. The incident occurred on Friday at 5pm in Esangweni Section.

Mokheseng said metro police specialised task team unit members spotted the two men while they were attempting to change the original number plates. When spotting the officers, they ran in different directions, leaving behind the other two, aged 32 and 35.

“One of the suspects arrested has a pending case of possession of an unlicensed firearm, registered at Atteridgeville Police Station.

“The apprehended men were taken to Tembisa Police Station and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and tampering with a vehicle’s registration plates,” said Mokheseng.
