Breast cancer survivor wants to educate Tembisans
Community to learn more about cancer.
Breast cancer survivor Lebogang Lesufi is on a drive to educate other women and the Tembisa community about cancer.
Through her non-profit organisation Kutwadi Restoration Foundation, Lesufi will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Fun Walk on October 19.
“Our aim is to educate the general public about cancer. We want to encourage them to go for regular check-ups. We have invited different experts who will be speaking on breast cancer,” explained Lesufi.
“There is a notion in black communities that cancer is a sickness for white people. This belief has led to the death of many of our people because they lack information about this particular sickness. This is where we come in.
I want to believe that being a breast cancer survivor will encourage and motivate other people to take this seriously and start going for check-ups, so that when cancer is detected they are able to go for early treatment and be saved,” she continued.
She said she was motivated to start her own foundation after noticing the kind of ignorance and lack of information about cancer, especially within the black communities.
“What motivated me to start this foundation is because I am a cancer and domestic violence survivor. I have learnt the hard way. Being a cancer and domestic violence survivor has fuelled the need in me to want to help others.
Through this foundation, we will be educating our communities about cancer and domestic violence. We want to help women break the silence and encourage them to get out of abusive relationships,” elaborated Lesufi.
She further invited men to be part in their walk and the day’s activities, citing they also need to be educated since they aren’t aware that they too can develop breast cancer.
She said more details about their fun-filled awareness event will be communicated in the media.
