EMPD stuck in slow traffic on Andrew Mapheto nails bag snatcher

It is believed he used an unloaded gun to carry out the crime

Three suspects will appear in court in connection with an armed robbery in Tembisa on Andrew Mapheto Road on September 11.

Metro police officers and members of the community arrested the two fleeing suspects. A third suspect was apprehended later.

Kobeli Mokheseng, metro police spokesperson, said the officers, stuck in slow-moving traffic, witnessed two men jumping out of a white Renault sedan five cars ahead of them. A female pedestrian in her 20s, walking on the sidewalk, was robbed at gunpoint.

The officers responded as the suspects, in possession of a 9mm pistol and the victim’s bag containing a bank card and identity document, ran in different directions.

“Members of the public who witnessed the ordeal gave chase after the bag snatcher and the officers went for the armed suspect. Both suspects, aged 22 and 25, were apprehended and the woman’s bag was recovered, as well as an unloaded 9mm Z88 pistol with its serial number tampered with,” said Mokheseng.

The third suspect (32), who was the driver, was picked up an hour later by EMPD members at his girlfriend’s house in Sedibeng following a tip-off.

“The white Renault sedan, registered to the 32-year-old suspect’s girlfriend, was impounded for further investigations,” continued Mokheseng.

All three suspects were booked in at Tembisa Police Station and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and armed robbery.

The victim was left unscathed.
