CareerBuild Programme builds career confidence

CareerBuild Programme learners graduate at Kaalfontein Secondary on September 7.

The CareerBuild Programme held their graduation ceremony at Kaalfontein Secondary School on September 7.

The youth programme for learners from Grade 11 and young adults up to 25 years started in 2007 at Kwabhekilanga Secondary School in Alexandra. In 2018, they proudly celebrated their 11th year of existence. During the 11 years, they have successfully facilitated programmes throughout Gauteng, Tshwane, Middelburg and Limpopo.

Recently, they joined the Kaalfontein family to nurture them through their careers and help learners identify their career choices. The seven-month programme started in February and came to an end in August.

Moeketsi Nchoba, CareerBuild marketing director, said in 2016 they piloted a Grade Nine programme that assists learners to choose a career direction as well as school subjects.

“Through this, we also introduced entrepreneurship as a viable option, guiding learners through a mentorship process to set them up for a life with possibilities as opposed to being trapped within poverty cycles and mindsets. This allows them to not only provide for themselves and their families, but impact their communities in a meaningful way,” said Nchoba.

“To date, over 4 000 South African youth have attended our programmes. We extend an invitation to each and every person who would like to form part of CareerBuild, whether this be financially, through mentoring, answering career-related questions, offer expertise to assist CareerBuild with your skills or in supporting our fund-raising events by attending and/or sponsoring to contact us.”

Babalwa Ursula Mabope, CareerBuild facilitator, said the programme’s mission is aimed at facilitating and coordinating leadership training workshops for schools and communities.

“It was a wonderful experience to have worked with such a cheery crowd of learners, so passionate and willing to learn, always wanting to receive knowledge about something and everything,” said Mabope.

“We want to activate the latent potential of youth from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and to empower individuals with practical tools for success born from vision, hope and positive action. To inform CareerBuilders of possible career choices.

“We want to provide them with life and workplace skills, to expose them to real workplace environments and to provide deserving CareerBuilders with funding, bursaries or loans to enable them to attend higher education institutions to further their education or start businesses.”
