Thirty two young people were offered learnerships at a scholarship and learnership programme, organised by Clr Thabang Jiyane and held at the Dominion Cathedral Church in Leboeng section, Tembisa, on September 11. Some of the stakeholders invited were Gauteng Community-Based Teacher Recruitment, South African Digital Content Organisation (Sadico) and Avuxeni Academy.
Jiyane of ANC Ward 7 said their focus was on the youth because a society that does not take care of its youth has no future. The programme aimed to give the youth skills so they can participate in the mainstream economy.
“Sadico has taken 32 learners for learnerships and their target is to take about 5 000 learners next year. “Avuxeni Academy needs 250 learners, between the ages of 18 to 28, to be trained in its IT department. No matric is required.
“Those who would like to come forward can call or WhatsApp me on 072 994 0327,” said Jiyane.
Paseka Mafereka, spokesperson of Sadico, said this programme was an opportunity for them to reach out to other young people and play a role in equipping the youth with skills.
“Sadico offers a variety of technological skills to the youth, from cellphone repair and PC building to solar installation and website building, to name a few.”
Their offices are based in Midrand and Fourways, but they offer training where there is a concentration of young people.
Mafereka said they also train youth on how to present, create a business plan and do market analysis to be able to create their own businesses.
One of the learnership recipients, Gift Phahlamohlaka, said he would to be in the Funza Lushaka programme and study for a Bachelors of Education qualification, specialising in senior and FET phase.
“This programme has been helpful to us because we now know about these institutions that we did not know existed. We now we have a clearer vision of where to apply and seek help.”
Phahlamohlaka, who is currently volunteering at the youth crime prevention desk in Rabasotho police station, added that they need to be exposed to more of these kinds of programmes to make more youth aware of them.
Gauteng Community-Based Teacher Recruitment coordinator Mary Selepe said they encourage children who completed matric to apply for Funza Lushaka bursaries that enable young people to study in the 24 universities in the country.
“People can apply online or come to us for assistance. For more information they can contact me on 083 670 2084.
“The Department of Education offers students a second chance to improve their matric results, one being a learner caller Percy who wrote in May and has a bachelor degree pass,” said Selepe.
