Fund-raiser to be held for eight-year-old losing eyesight
Currently, she only has 35 per cent eyesight in one eye and 70 per cent in the other.
Armand Hofmeyr will perform at a fund-raiser for Nelani van den Raad (8), who is losing her eyesight, at Laerskool Edleen on October 11 .
It is a race against time as the family of this Laerskool Edleen learner needs to raise R250 000 in order to save Nelani’s eyesight that’s being affected by a disease known as retinitis pigmentosa. The condition causes her retina to deteriorate rapidly, which will lead to eventual blindness.

According to Lucinda Söderblom, Nelani’s mother Vicky had been in touch with a specialist at the Federocv Clinic in Germany, who said Nelani was a candidate for treatment offered at the clinic.
“This is a very expensive treatment plan and the medical aid doesn’t cover this. The funds raised will be used for flights to Germany, accommodation and, of course, the treatment for Nelani.”

The treatment will not only stop the deterioration, but will also hopefully improve her eyesight. Currently, she only has 35 per cent eyesight in one eye and 70 per cent in the other.
She says the family has done a few fund-raisers and there are a few still to take place. However, they need to raise the funds before December as they need to go to Germany by that time.
Thus far they have raised R49 000 but need a minimum of R250 000.
The concert will be held at 6pm and tickets are sold at R80 per person.
