Youth empowered with knowledge and skills

Young people showed the ropes.

Ward 10 and 11 Youth Sector hosted a youth seminar where young people were armed with the knowledge and skills to start their own businesses and make a life for themselves.

Hosted at the Sam Hlalele Community Hall on Saturday, this youth seminar attracted keen young people from the township.

“This seminar was specially designed for all young people who are trying to build a better tomorrow for themselves and those around them.

“We decided to bring all the relevant departments, such as the National Youth Development Agency, YES, Youth Directorate and the Gauteng Legislature, closer to the people to help them with different economic empowerment opportunities that are available for them to explore,” explained one of the event organisers, Gugulethu Mthimkhulu.

She argued that many people, especially those coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, lack knowledge when it comes to business transactions.

“We want young people to break free from drugs, substance abuse and prostitution,” she said.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Youth Directorate head, Modise Kwetle, said their mandate is to mainstream socio-economic development programmes for young people and will therefore continue to invest in the future of young people.

“Young people are the future of this country and if we invest in them today we are simply building a better country for the next generations to come.

“This is the reason why Mayor Mzwandile Masina recently announced a number of youth empowerment programmes such as the R100-million bursary fund, Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) and Vukuphile.

“All these programmes are aimed at empowering the youth and offering them opportunities,” he said.

He said the city has just announced the Ekurhuleni SMME Fund, where young people with business ideas will be able to access funding.

“We are partnering with the National Empowerment Fund, where young people will be given an opportunity to access those types of funds. As we speak, the city is moving towards programmes and projects, such as farmer developer, which is an agriculture programme for young people who seek opportunities and develop themselves in the space of agriculture.

“We have many programmes which seek to empower young people,” he concluded.
