Kempton SAPS officers honoured at medal parade

One medal for 10 years of service was also presented

South African Police Service centenary medals were handed out to officers at Kempton Park Police Station during a medal parade at Maranatha Church on September 18.

The centenary medals are representative of celebrating a 100 years of policing, from April 1, 1913 to April 1, 2013, instituted by the then President of South Africa Jacob Zuma.

In addition, all officers who served during the 2010 Soccer World Cup were honoured with Soccer World Cup medals.

Medals for 10 and 20 years service are usually also handed out the parade. Only one 10-year service medal had been awarded to Det Sgt Tumelo Phaka (39).

Phaka told Express his years of service in the Kempton Park force had been very exciting.

“I started in 2005 when I did my six months basic training. It has been amazing.”

“I’ve had a few convictions over the years. The one was where I responded to an armed robbery at the Keg that used to be on CR Swart Drive.

“The suspects jumped into two vehicles, after which a chase ensued. The suspects opened fire. After the drama had cooled down, I apprehended the two suspects who had been armed with one firearm.”

Station commander Brig Samuel Maredi hands over a 10-year service medal and a centenary medal to Det Sgt Tumelo Phaka.
