Gauteng Province stands up against drugs
Gauteng Province re-launched its GCR to stand up against drug users.
The Gauteng Province re-launched its GCR Anti-Substance Abuse Social Movement campaign, themed #Keepit100 #Imfinewithoutdrugs #KeMoja at Winnie Mandela Primary School on September 20.
The relaunch follows a series of consultations with stakeholders in the sector to consolidate inputs to develop a three-year programme of action. The campaign was first launched by Gauteng Premier David Makhura in 2016 at Eldorado Park.
The community of Tembisa and surrounding areas gathered at Phumlani Mall and prepared a march to drive the message. Marchers arrived at Winnie Mandela Primary School where the official programme for the re-launch of GCR Anti-Substance Abuse Social Movement took place. The heads of departments led the signing of the Pledge, joined by members of various stakeholders.

MEC for Social Development Thuliswa Nkabinde-Khawe said the Gauteng government remains committed in strengthening partnerships with civil society organisations, communities, the business sector, as well as the media in combating the scourge of substance abuse.

“We want to reignite the support of multi-stakeholder groupings behind the social movement campaign. As such, we want to mobilise all communities to join hands with Gauteng Province to take action in combating alcohol and drug abuse,” said Nkabinde-Khawe.
“Together we will realise the dream of a drug-free Gauteng region by pulling the plug on drugs and alcohol abuse,”
said Tebello Mkhonto, director at Gauteng Department of Social Development. He said they have a provincial substance abuse forum which will be inaugurated to pledge their support to the fight of drugs and substance abuse.
The District Commissioner of Ekurhuleni, Maj Gen Vincent Leshabane, also said that a person who does not have a child who is a drug addict will not understand what a milestone this initiative is because children who are addicted steal everything just to feed their addiction.
“We at SAPS pledge to work with communities to arrest these drug lords because these drugs are destroying our children’s future,” said Leshabane.
“We pledge to participate in awareness campaigns creating awareness on the link of substance abuse and alcohol which leads to various crimes conducted. We undertake to render substance abuse programmes to offenders and we commit to improve life skills programmes to offenders,” said Correctional Services Commissioner Grace Molatedi.
