BREAKING NEWS: Shacks go up in flames on Great North Rd (videos)
A support group for the victims has been started
Numerous shacks are on fire in the informal settlement on Great North Road towards Benoni.
It is believed the fire broke out earlier on Monday evening.
Videos posted on social media showed many residents standing on the side of the road watching their meagre homes go up in flames.
A WhatsApp support group set up to assist the homeless in days to come was full within a few hours and a second one was started.
The NG Church Bonaero Park on Malpensa Street has been made available as a drop-off point for clothes, blankets, food, water and other necessities. People are already dropping off goods.
The homeless people will temporarily be taken to the city hall and Dries Niemandt Park.
At this stage it is not known what caused the fire or whether there were any casualties.
