SPCA and TAG jump in to rescue Max animals after fire
Eight animals are still missing after the fire that broke out at Max Informal Settlement.
A cat burnt to death during the devastating fire that engulfed the entire Max Informal Settlement on Monday evening.
According to Kira Sparrow, manager at Kempton Park SPCA, the cat was trapped inside one of the shacks during the fire.
“Charmaine Joubert and Shadrack Baloyi went to the settlement to try and rescue the animals. While they were there they were informed of the cat that died,” said Sparrow.

“During one of our recent outreach programmes at the same settlement we discovered there were 13 animals staying at the settlement. During the same outreach, we took in and sterilised the same cat that died in the flames, this is sad indeed.”
Sparrow also said eight of the 13 animals are unaccounted for after the fire, one cat and seven dogs.
“We took in one dog that had seemingly ran away during the fire but returned. The dog was not injured but very traumatised by everything,” said Sparrow on Tuesday.
“The Animal Guardians (TAG) also took four dogs but we don’t know where the others are. We hope they ran away during everything and will return soon. The noise, fire and panic might have scared them away but we will continue to look for the other eight dogs.
“We appeal to the community to assist us with these animals to have them treated, vaccinated and sterilised, as we intend to return them to their rightful owners once their homes have been rebuilt. I am asking this for Kempton Park SPCA and on behalf of TAG.”
