Seniors have ‘egg-ceptional’ day with over 700 eggs

In celebration of World Egg Day, 60 dozen eggs were donated to Wynand Marais Senior Citizens Club

Sixty dozen eggs were donated to members of Wynand Marais Senior Citizens Club on October 2 in celebration of World Egg Day on October 11.

The motivation behind World Egg Day is to advise people around the globe that eggs are solid nourishment and ought to be incorporated into their daily diet.

The egg day event at the club was introduced by chairperson Diana Smuts, who told the elderly about the generosity of Belinda Meyer from human resources at Eggspert Eggs. Belinda is the daughter of Michelle Meyer, a member of the seniors club.

Michelle said being involved in the seniors club had been a fantastic way to stay socially active, as the club gathers once a week for a variety of activities, such as bingo, darts, spelling bees, music quizzes and many more.

She started with a joke to break the ice, saying: “What came first, the chicken or the egg? So, the reason my daughter donated to the club is because she can see that I’m happy being part of this community,” Michelle said.

Michelle said leftover eggs would be donated to the families directly affected by the fire at Max Informal Settlement.

The blaze ripped through the settlement on Monday evening, destroying hundreds of shacks. Hundreds of families have been left homeless and without basic necessities.
