Fund-raiser for mother and baby
Mari and Johan are not allowed to hold Ruaché for at least two months while she’s recovering from hairline fractures.
A family-themed fund-raiser for Glen Marais baby Ruaché Botha and her mother Mari will be hosted at Hoërskool Jeugland on October 12 at 9am.
The funds raised will be allocated towards Mari and Ruaché’s medical bills after months of touch-and-go care for mother and baby since Ruaché was prematurely born at 26 weeks on May 15.
“I will talk about our extremely trying journey thus far,” said Mari.
The latest news on the baby’s progress is that doctors did a full-body X-ray and found many hairline fractures. The fractures were detected in her skull, collarbone, upper and lower arms, femurs and lower legs, said Mari.
“The doctors call it ‘rickets’, which is a very weak bone structure due to a shortage of vitamin D. This is also due to the medical procedures, antibiotics, ileostomy, etc.”
Ruaché’s bone density is very low and she has been receiving vitamin supplements. Her parents are not allowed to pick her up or hold her for a while because the condition can take between two to four months to heal.

Prior to this dad Johan said: “Our fighter is doing great as she has been extubated and placed on a SiPAP, which is a form of positive airway pressure ventilator.
“She weighs 1.57kg, her lungs are doing much better and she is progressing fast.”
The fund-raiser will also feature guest speaker Lourentia de Kock, a private practising psychologist since 1995. She regularly writes for magazines and has also been on multiple radio talk shows.
De Kock is also co-author of Afrikaans books with Maretha Maartins, which include Moeilike Mense, Die Bybel en my Gemoed, Trauma van Verliese and Die Groot Huweliksboek.
Singers will also attend the event to provide entertainment to attendees.
Tickets cost R150 a person, including refreshments. For more information, contact Mari on 083 789 0130.
