Four years later and still no roof over their heads

Winnie Mandela Zone 2 family is getting no answers from government

Almost four years after construction of their RDP house commenced, the Mailula family of Winnie Mandela Zone 2 is still waiting for the completion of their home.

The family of more than six children is currently forced to share a one-roomed shack.

According to Elizabeth Mailula, government officials approached her family in 2015 with the intention to build an RDP house for them and upon signing all the necessary documents, construction commenced.

“We had a two-bedroomed house in the yard but we were told the contractors would have to destroy our building first to accommodate the RDP house they wanted to build for us.

“We agreed because we wanted a decently built house. And after demolishing our house, they started their work as they promised. But, then a week after they had reached roof level, they stopped building and did not even inform us of the sudden stop,” explained Mailula.

She said after seeing little progress, she approached the department of Human Settlements for answers but couldn’t get any.

“I have knocked on every government door for help but with little success. We started seeking help in 2015 but to date nothing has happened.

“We are now forced to share this little space with the entire family,” she went on.

Attempts to get comment from the department of Human Settlements proved fruitless at the time going to press.
