Winnie Mandela Memorial Lecture hosted in Zone 10

Pageant honours Mam Winnie Mandela.

The organisers of the Miss Face of Winnie Mandela pageant hosted the Winnie Mandela Memorial Lecture at the Winnie Mandela Zone 10’s White House Hall on October 5.

The purpose of the lecture was to educate pageants about the life of the late Winnie Mandela, former president of the ANC Women’s League. The contestants, to feature in the Miss Winnie Mandela pageant scheduled to take place at the Winnie Mandela Zone 3’s old clinic facility on October 26, will be expected to answer questions based on Mandela’s life.

Co-founder and co-organiser of Miss Face of Winnie Mandela Ernest Ndlovu said is was important for the contestants to know the history of the late county’s foremost icon if they are to be considered for a win in the pageant.

“Our finalists will have to answer questions based on Winnie Mandela’s life based on the lecture delivered by Zanele Nkomo, the ANC MP, on October 5.

“The pageant is specifically dedicated to the late Winnie “Mama” Mandela, and will be hosted on her birthday, September 26.

“We have two categories of Miss Teen and Miss Senior,” said Ndlovu.

One of the finalists, Palesa Mailula, who performed an opening poem during the lecture, said her poem was based on the life and liberation struggle of Mandela, and what she stood for.

“We stand tall to embrace the opportunities she opened for us as women. I am proud to recite a poem about the legacy she has left behind.

“She fought for our rights and an end to gender inequalities. Today I wouldn’t be standing on the podium to recite my poems,” said Mailula.

Ndlovu added that people can vote for their favourite finalist at Pageants Vote SA with the link available to the pageants Facebook page of the same title.

“On her birthday, we need to celebrate and honour her legacy and declare October 26 a national holiday,” said Ndlovu.
