Two foreign nationals were arrested on charges of possession of fraudulent documents on West Street in Kempton Park central business district (CBD) on Wednesday afternoon last week.
According to Sgt Dipuo Ditshego, deputy spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, this came after the crime intelligence unit received a tip-off.
“The tip-off was about an internet café allegedly issuing illegal documents,” said Ditshego.
“The team went to investigate at the said address and found the suspects in possession of fraudulent Kempton Park Taxi Association (KETA) documents.”
KETA confirmed to Express that the documents were fraudulent and it did not come from the association.
“We don’t know these people and we can confirm that the documents found on the scene are counterfeit and not from the association,” said Themba Mkhonto, Kempton Park Taxi Association public relations officer.
“We condemn such acts and advise the community to contact the association to verify documents that might have our masthead, name, logo or even our names.”
Upon further investigation and search of the premises, police also discovered fraudulent unabridged birth certificates, identity documents and application forms for IDs with stamps.
Sebenza SAPS and members from KETA were also on the scene. Both suspects, aged 28 and 48, were detained at Kempton Park Police Station holding cells pending their appearances in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
Kempton Park SAPS’ acting station commander Col Lesetja Manewa applauded the members and said: “As police, officers shall at all times prevent crime and investigate any criminal conduct.”
