Man sustains fractures to leg when excavator falls into Clayville dam

The patient was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

A 47-year-old man sustained fractures to this leg when an excavator he was driving fell over at a landfill site on Olifantsfontein Road in Clayville on Saturday morning.

Shawn Herbst from Netcare 911 said the accident happened around noon.

Reports from the scene indicated the excavator had fallen over into the landfill dam when a sandbank gave way.

The driver managed to extricate himself from the excavator. However, due to his injuries he was only able to get as far as the tracks, said Herbst.

Medics stabilised the patient with advanced life support intervention and once treated, he was immobilised and safely carried to a waiting ambulance.

The patient was transported to hospital in a serious condition.
