Malaria fight taken to Tembisa
We have a goal of eradicating malaria permanently within the Gauteng province
With SADC Malaria Week earmarked for November 2 to 8, the Ekurhuleni Health District Office will host a number of activities aimed at creating much-needed awareness.
According to the Ekurhuleni Health District Office, Tembisa was identified as a suitable area for this campaign, having been identified as the hardest hit.
“Many malaria cases arise in Tembisa and it is an area that is overpopulated with people who are from various parts of Gauteng and surrounding countries, such as Mozambique, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, in search of jobs,” said Ekurhuleni Health District Office’s Christina Mnisi.
“We have a goal of eradicating malaria permanently within the Gauteng province.
“As a district, we plan to focus more on malaria prevention and that can be achieved through provision of necessary information to the people through such awareness campaigns.
“It has been the district’s goal to ensure a zero-malaria province for many years. This year the district took a resolution to conduct a massive campaign in Tembisa in order to educate the people about malaria and how it can be prevented,” she said.
Mnisi said the campaign will also be suitable for this township because there are so many people in the streets during the day.
She said for this campaign to be a success, they will need the support of local businesses with items such as water, chairs and tents.
“Somdaka Funeral Services has committed to sponsoring us with tents for shelter, but we still need water and chairs. So we would like to appeal for support from both the business sector and the general public to be part of this programme because it is for their own benefit,” she said.
