Keep your Sassa card slips – fraudsters could use it

Ngubeni said Sassa beneficiaries must safeguard their payment cards and PIN codes.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) would like to warn the recipients of social grants to be cautious of any suspicious activity involving their gold card.

Sassa spokesperson Senzeni Ngubeni issued the warning on Monday.

Sassa grant recipients who suspect fraud on their accounts should immediately report the incident to their nearest post office or Sassa office. At the office they will need to produce their ID book or card, social grant gold payment card and proof of residence to confirm their personal details.

An affidavit is compulsory, stating and confirming that the unlawful transaction or withdrawal was not committed by the recipient or rightful owner of the payment card.

If the beneficiary receives a social grant payment through a personal bank account, they are obliged to bring along proof of banking details. The post office officials will assist the beneficiary and handle all the processes of ensuring the matter is investigated.

Ngubeni said Sassa beneficiaries must safeguard their payment cards and PIN codes.

They must also avoid throwing away the slips, as these contain personal information of the beneficiary, and fraudsters can use this information to access money in the account.

Beneficiaries can change their password at Sassa offices or post offices if they suspect that the PIN code has been compromised.
