Water shedding can be avoided – minister

Minister Sisulu encourages South Africans to be water savvy

The Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, on Monday called on all South Africans to take collective action to save water as the heat wave that grips the country looks set to continue to unbearable levels.

Addressing members of the media during a briefing at Rand Water in Glenvista, Sisulu said climate change is a reality and that South Africa is one of the countries feeling the effects of the phenomenon.

Sisulu said water users must do whatever is necessary to ensure that water was conserved. “There will not be a need for water shedding if water consumers adhered to calls to save water.

“There is no need for the public to panic at this stage. It is imperative for water consumers to be prudent in the way they use water.”

The CEO of Rand Water, Sipho Mosai, raised the critical matter of having to reduce national consumption from 5 000 megalitres a day to the required 4 400 megalitres a day. It is important to realise the necessary reduction, which will ensure continued water security for the country.
