Motorists warned of dangerous sinkhole on the R50
The developing sinkhole is situated about 16km east of Bapsfontein
Motorists are warned about a developing sinkhole along the Delmas Road (R50) in Ekurhuleni.
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport discovered the formation of the sinkhole during routine maintenance.
The developing sinkhole is situated about 6km from the R25 and R50 intersection and about 16km east of Bapsfontein, the department said on Wednesday afternoon.
Due to the severe nature of the sinkhole, the department has appointed a company to carry out detailed geotechnical investigations to assess the situation.
Upon completion of the investigation, a report will indicate the cause of action or remedial actions to be undertaken.
As a precautionary measure, the department has installed speed reduction signage and rumble strips to ensure the safety of motorists.
It has also ensured that the steep gradient has been temporarily filled for easy passage, with cracks being monitored and recorded on a daily basis.
