Fire fighters contain fire in Clayville

Blazing fire stopped from destroying building.

The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters prevented a near catastrophe following their heroic and swift action to contain the blazing fire at a business building on October 28.

It isn’t clear at the moment what caused the fire that almost reduced Umzanzi Forklift Spares and Bearing centre in the Clayville industrial area to ashes, but all would be clear since a full investigation has already been launched.

According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, the fire broke out just around 5pm and they were alerted about the fire and quickly responded.

“We were actually alerted by someone who just walked in at our centre and we quickly sent out our two fire engines who managed to get there right on time and contain the fire,” said Ntladi.

He said even though he can’t say what caused the fire, he hinted at them suspecting the fire may have been triggered by an electrical fault.

“I cannot really say at this stage, but we are still investigating and as soon as we know, we will let you know. We cannot rule anything out at the moment, but we suspect the cause may have been an electrical fault,” he said.

This business centre is made up of a panel-beating workshop, motor spares workshop and a dry cleaner.

The vehicles which were parked inside and outside the premises were not burnt or damaged.

“We managed to contain the fire that had crept in between the ceiling and the roof by cutting open the roof. There were no injuries and casualties reported.

“We would like to advise local businesses to always adhere to safety measures. Housekeeping and compliance with safety measures are very important.

“They must apply proper care and refrain from overloading of electrical circuits. Personal safety is also important,” advised Ntladi.

Attempts to solicit comment from the owners of the business centre proved fruitless at the time og going to press.
